Did You Hear the One About . . .?

Did you hear the story where the heads of the NACD and the PCAOB talking about women on boards of directors?

The National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) is an independent not-for-profit membership organization devoted exclusively to improving corporate board performance. Since 1977, the NACD has conducted educational programs, standard-setting research, and provided information and guidance on a variety of board governance issues and practices.

The president of the NACD was talking with the new head of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), the accounting watchdog created by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 and the SEC. The PCAOB president was encouraging the NACD and its corporate members to do a better job of finding independent board members from the ranks of female and diversity candidates.

The NACD president's response was,

"We've looked, but we haven't been able to find qualified female and minority candidates."

The head of the PCAOB replied,

    "You're not looking hard enough."

  • Who's right? the NACD or the PCAOB?
  • What do the numbers tell us about women on boards?
  • How many women are there on California boards?
  • Have we made progress over the years?
  • Where do women on today's boards come from?
  • How do they get there?
  • What do the numbers tell us, California Girls, in particular?
  • Why should we care about women on boards?
  • What do we do, once we understand The Data?
